I've just decided to go on a trip to Italy over Spring Break. Probably not the greatest idea on a student budget, but a close friend is studying abroad in Florence (where I could stay for free) and the flights are really cheap right now, so I've decided to go for it. It would mean traveling solo and spending a few days by myself, which I admit scares me to death, but it also means 4 days in Rome and 3 days in Florence.
Have you been to either of these cities? Recommendations of restaurants / shops / hostles?

ok i haven't been yet, but i'm going in august. you'll have to tell me where to go!!
i can tell you about traveling solo though. i did it for a day (10 hour layover!) in dublin, then spent a few days solo-ing it in barcelona when i was in catalunya with petra last summer. it's interesting. definitely feels weird the first day, but by the end of the day you realize that it's just as awesome as going with someone else. best part: going at your pace, whether that's fast or slow. the only con i could find was that if you want a picture of you + something (tower of pisa for example), you have to entrust your camera to a stranger who may or may not take a good picture, and who (at least i worried) may or may not run off with your camera.
HAVE FUN!!!
